Armor
Armor is generally worn to protect certain parts of the body against slashing, piercing, and bludgeoning attacks. Some types of armor additionally provide protection against the elements, especially if they are imbued with defensive skills through magical or supernatural enchantments, though this isn't their primary purpose.
Although armor is worn all over the body, even in medieval times, for simplicity's sake, we will deal with three types of armor: body armor, helmets, and shields.
Body Armor
Body armor in medieval times was generally made of either metal or the hides of animals, usually leather. Metal armor was all generally heavy to some degree, but for Dice Mob, and to keep it simple, we'll consider metal armor to be of three categories: light, medium, and heavy. Leather, on the other hand, was generally lighter, but we'll also consider this to be of the same three categories: light, medium, and heavy.
To give names to these three categories of metal armor, from lightest to heaviest, we will call them Ringmail, Chainmail, and Platemail. Likewise leather armor will be called Leather, Studded Leather, and Hide armor.
The following table shows the defensive and attribute adjustments of the six different armors:
| Armor | P | S | B | F | B/A | E | Speed | Stealth | Swimming/Flying | Encumbrance | Dodge | Minimum Strength |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ringmail | 4 | 4 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | -1 | -2 | 1 | Yes | 2 |
| Chainmail | 6 | 6 | 2 | 0 | 2 | 0 | -1 | -2 | No | 1 | No | 3 |
| Platemail | 8 | 8 | 4 | 0 | 2 | 0 | -2 | -4 | No | 2 | No | 4 |
| Leather | 0 | 2 | 4 | 0 | 0 | 1 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 1 | Yes | 0 |
| Studded Leather | 1 | 3 | 5 | 1 | 1 | 2 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 1 | Yes | 1 |
| Hide | 2 | 4 | 6 | 2 | 2 | 3 | -1 | -1 | -4 | 1 | No | 2 |
Helmets
Like body armor, helmets can be of leather or metal. Some helmets sit atop the head. Other surround the entire head, blocking of the field of vision but also providing much more protection.
The following table shows the defensive and attribute adjustments of the two helmet types:
| Helmet | P | S | B | B/A | Perception | Stealth | Encumbrance |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Full | 3 | 3 | 1 | 2 | -2 | -1 | 1 |
| Metal | 1 | 1 | 1 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 1 |
| Leather | 0 | 1 | 1 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 1 |
Shields
Shields can be made of wood or metal, but they essentially protect the same. To keep things simple, we will have large shields, small shields, and bucklers. Bucklers allow for a character to use both hands, including dual-wielding. Small and large shields occupy one of the character's arms and prevents using that hand to wield a weapon.
In addition, large shields provide defense against point to point elemental attacks, including fans and cones.
The following table shows the defensive and attribute adjustments of the shield types:
| Shield | P | S | B | Point to Point Elemental | Encumbrance | Minimum Strength |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Large | 3 | 3 | 3 | 2 | 2 | 3 |
| Small | 2 | 2 | 2 | 0 | 1 | 2 |
| Buckler | 1 | 1 | 1 | 0 | 1 | 1 |
