Armor

Armor is generally worn to protect certain parts of the body against slashing, piercing, and bludgeoning attacks. Some types of armor additionally provide protection against the elements, especially if they are imbued with defensive skills through magical or supernatural enchantments, though this isn't their primary purpose.

Although armor is worn all over the body, even in medieval times, for simplicity's sake, we will deal with three types of armor: body armor, helmets, and shields.

Body Armor

Body armor in medieval times was generally made of either metal or the hides of animals, usually leather. Metal armor was all generally heavy to some degree, but for Dice Mob, and to keep it simple, we'll consider metal armor to be of three categories: light, medium, and heavy. Leather, on the other hand, was generally lighter, but we'll also consider this to be of the same three categories: light, medium, and heavy.

To give names to these three categories of metal armor, from lightest to heaviest, we will call them Ringmail, Chainmail, and Platemail. Likewise leather armor will be called Leather, Studded Leather, and Hide armor.

The following table shows the defensive and attribute adjustments of the six different armors:

Armor P S B F B/A E Speed Stealth
Ringmail 4 4 0 0 0 0 0 -1
Chainmail 6 6 2 0 2 0 -1 -2
Platemail 8 8 4 0 2 0 -2 -4
Leather 0 2 4 0 0 1 0 0
Studded Leather 1 3 5 1 1 2 0 0
Hide 2 4 6 2 2 3 -1 -1

Heavy Body Armor

Heavy body armor provides much higher protections vs slashing and piercing, but at the expense of skills which require flexibility and less weight. A character in heavy armor cannot swim under normal circumstances. They also perform stealth and body mechanics checks at -4 dice.

Name Defense 1)
Banded S*6, P*4, B*3
Brigandine S*5, P*5, B*2
Chainmail S*6, P*4
Full Plate S*8, P*5, B*2
Hide F*2, ½ B/A, ½ E, S*2, P*2, B*4
Platemail S*7, P*4
Scalemail S*4, P*5, B

Light Body Armor

Light body armor generally does not provide the protection of heavy body armor, but it does provide some protection and it does so while not hindering swimming, body mechanics, or stealth.

Name Defense 2)
Kevlar Vest P*10, S*2, B*2
Leather ¼ F, ¼ B/A, ¼ E, S*2, B*2
Padded ½ F, ¼ B/A, ½ E, S*2, B*4
Studded Leather ¼ F, ¼ B/A, ¼ E, S*4, P*3, B*2

Shield

Shields are usually held in one arm while the other arm carries the weapon. Bucklers are smaller shields attached to the arm and used to ward off a single attack per defensive action. Small and tower shields can ward off all attacks from an opponent directly in front of the attacker.

Name Defense
Buckler S*2, B
Small Shield S*2, P*2, B*2
Tower Shield S*2, P*5, B*2

Head Armor

Head armor is worn on the head or neck and is generally designed to protect the head and/or neck from attack from force weapons. To keep things simple, we will not be figuring out where a character or monster is attacked but simply add this to a general protection against that particular defense.

Name Defense 3)
Chain Coif S, P
Horned Leather Helm ¼ F, ¼ B/A, S, ½ P, B
Iron Collar S*2, P
Iron Helmet S, B
Leather Collar ½ S, ½ B

Studded Leather Collar S, ½ P, B
Studded Leather Helmet ¼ F, ¼ B/A, ½ S, ½ P, B

Arm Armor

Arm armor is a generic group of armor protecting both the arms and the hands. Generally only one pair of arm armor can be worn, but if one protects the hands and wrists and the other the upper arms, two can be worn, at the GMs discretion.

Name Defense 4)
Fur-Lined Leather Gloves ¼ P/D, ½ F, ¼ B/A, S
Iron Bracers S
Iron Gauntlets ½ P/D, S, P
Leather Armbands ½ S, ½ B

Foot Armor

Foot armor protects the ankles and feet. The poison and disease protection provided represents protection from snakes and diseases which can be easier to catch by slogging through swamps and infested areas with more limited foot protection.

Name Defense 6)
Fur-Lined Boots ¼ P/D, ½ F, ¼ B/A, ¼ E, ½ P
Leather Boots ¼ P/D, ¼ F, ¼ B/A, ¼ E, P
